Finch was born in La Mirada Calif. and began playing softball as a child. Doug Finch's father, Doug was her first pitching instructor. Jennie, who was only 10 when she started, was the first using the Finch Windmill which was a hand conditioning device invented by Doug. When she was in high school Jennie pitched a perfect six-inning game and thirteen no-hitters. After that, she attended University of Arizona, where as a pitcher and a first baseman, she was all-time All-American three times. She was awarded the Honda Award, given to the top players in softball in 2001 after the Wildcats were awarded the title of champions in national competition and then in 2002 was clinched by her.
